Assemble an Alien Article

I was honoured to write an article for Character Design Quarterly on different ways to plan and research your character before even picking up a pencil.

WANT TO CREATE A UNIQUE OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD ALIEN CHARACTER?

Not all aliens are little green beings with two antennae perched on their head! But how do you create a unique alien character out of thin outer-space air? Here are some fun exercises to get those ideas flowing.

Finished Character Examples

HELIX RAGGAMUFFIN

Wheeler dealer and expert junk picker, Helix can sniff out a spare part in a mountain of wreckage.
He regularly bends intergalactic regulations to get what he needs.

THIWP JACKSON

Inventor and scavenger. Thiwp spends much of his time absent-mindedly submerged in muck, scrounging around for useful objects.

CRONK BLUUDO

She’s short-tempered but a brilliant engineer. Incredibly heavy-handed, she smashes metal then welds it together into super cool, impossibly weird operational vehicles.
